Career Goals:
This program is designed to provide training for
students and graduates of other programs that do not include physiology
as the basis for a career in the natural health field. It is required
for the Diploma in Aromatherapy.
Upon completion of this 15-module, nine-month program, you will be able to:
-
Understand and discuss body systems from articular to urinary and their integration.
-
Discuss new concepts, including the extracellular matrix, maintaining homeostasis and a consistent internal environment.
-
Understand and discuss clinical correlates that demonstrate application of physiology.
Syllabus
You will study the following systems as well as
the Integration of Body Systems; Extracellular Matrix; Musculoskeletal;
Nervous and Special Senses; Circulatory; Integumentary; Respiratory;
Digestive; Liver; Endocrine; Reproductive; Immune & Lymphatic;
Urinary.
You will learn about maintaining homeostasis - a
consistent internal environment. The program diverges from the standard
texts in that you study integration of body systems. This concept of
holism is so important in natural medicine and is often poorly
understood because the study of physiology has always been undertaken
from a reductionist point of view. This has lead to detailed knowledge
of the function of individual systems, but a severe lack of information
as to how different body systems interact. The other unorthodox system
section listed is the extracellular matrix which European studies
suggest may help to understand the cause of chronic degenerative
diseases.
The Lesson Manuals are presented in an outline format
to facilitate reading ease and clarify organization of a large amount
of material. At the end of each "organ" system section, performance
objectives are listed. If you are able to "answer" these objectives
then you can be assured you understand the section material. To
facilitate the learning process there are "clinical correlates"
subsections throughout the notes. These clinical subsections are
included in an attempt to demonstrate how knowledge from the section
can be applied in a clinical setting.
