This course takes students on an in-depth tour of the fundamental principles of
pharmacognosy (the knowledge of medicinal plant preparations and extracts) and
phytochemistry
(literally, ‘plant’ chemistry) as they apply to the clinical practice
of botanical medicine. We will examine the major categories and
subcategories of herbal constituents in order to provide a reasonable
framework for understanding how molecules contribute to an herb’s
observable actions.
We’ll also study quality control issues,
how to judge botanical potency, and principles of extraction, synergy,
and variability. Colorful 3-D molecular models, diagrams, and plant
photographs help to bring the concepts to life for the
visually-oriented learner. While examining the details of plant
constituents, this course holistically incorporates knowledge from
traditional Western herbal medicine with scientific information from
contemporary chemistry, botany, and human physiology.
Upon completion of this 4-week, online course you will gain an understanding and practical working knowledge of:
• The history and scope of pharmacognosy and its relevance to the herbal practitioner;
• The meaning of phytochemical terms and structure drawings;
•
The different types of compounds found in the most frequently used
botanicals and how these are categorized and related to one another;
• The types of compounds associated with specific actions (both therapeutic and potentially toxic) in commonly used herbs;
• Phytochemical profiles of important medicinal plants and how the constituents contribute to their effects;
• Principles of synergistic action between constituents and herbal formulas or combinations;
•
Relevant concepts of solubility, extraction media, concentration,
standardization, analytical methods, and other knowledge important for
the production and evaluation of high quality herbal extracts;
• How to find accurate information on herbal constituents via internet searching, and how to find and use reliable databases;
•
How to utilize principles of pharmacognosy and phytochemistry to
enhance your skills in clinical practice, herbal product production,
herbal and health care education programs, or retail environments.
