ACHS President's Corner

1. How does aromatherapy affect or change depression? What’s the actual physical process that occurs?

Research has substantiated the historical use of aromatherapy for depression. While we can generalize about the action of essential oils on the nervous system, it is important to remember that each essential oil has unique constituents and as such may have a unique physiological and psychological action.

How aromatherapy affects depression will also depend on the cause of the depression. Emotional and physiological factors can both play a part and Aromatherapy is unique in that it can affect both psychological and physiological processes. Click here to read the rest of this article.

ACHS President

Welcome The Newest Members of the ACHS Family

In 2000, Kyler migrated to Oregon from the Northwest corner of Montana. He pursued studies at the University of Portland and abroad at the Universidad de Granada, Spain, receiving BA's in Communication & Spanish.  Sparked by his experience in Spain, he continued to live and work in Latin America, sharing culture, language, smiles, and creating new experiences and friendships.

Settling in now with ACHS in Spring 2008, Portland is no longer hub away from home, but home itself.  Kyler brings with him a shared dedication to natural health and happiness, focusing on Holistic Nutrition, living foods and Ashtanga and Hatha Yoga.  In his free time he can be found enjoying the diversity of activities and geology of the NW or cultivating herbs and foods in his back "yarden."
Chris is a Licensed Massage Therapist and comes to ACHS after having the privilege of working with the world-renown Canyon Ranch Health Resort in Tucson, Arizona. He loves the Pacific-Northwest and is happy to call Portland home.

Chris has always had a passion for helping others. Upon graduation from high school in Tucson, Chris pursued a career as a full-time volunteer minister in Brooklyn, New York. After 15 years in the Big Apple, Chris moved back to the Southwest, attended college at University of Phoenix, and successfully completed his training in alternative health as a Licensed Massage Therapist with Apollo College. He looks forward to helping others pursue their educational goals with ACHS.
Robert Eastman, born and raised in Oregon, loves the outdoors and all the beauty that it has to offer. Joining the Admissions team of Australasian College of Health Sciences in May of 2008, Robert brings a unique perspective in serving students. Graduating with a degree in Business Marketing, Robert brings 7 years experience in a variety of business and sales related fields.

His experiences and appreciation for education and health sciences compel him to assist both students and faculty in expanding the services Australasian College of Health Sciences has to offer. Robert’s interests include: hiking, backpacking, camping and when ever possible, enjoying the backcountry of the great Northwest.

Health Freedom Update

Health Freedom is important for everyone!  I feel it is very important to ensure that everyone has the freedom and right to access alternative health care, and for alternative health care practitioners to be able to practice.

Each state has different laws and regulations regarding what you can and cannot do when it comes to complementary and alternative health care.

Right now there are 6 states that have health freedom laws.  These are: Minnesota, California, Rhode Island, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Idaho.  If you live in one of these states, you need to know the laws regarding health freedom, what you can and cannot do, and what disclosures you may need to provide to your clients.

There are 15 states and the District of Columbia that license or regulate naturopathic physicians.  If your state is one that regulates naturopathic physicians, you need to know what that law says in regards to what you can and cannot do.  These states are: Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia.

There are some national health freedom organizations that I work with that have a lot of great information on their websites.  I would like to share these with you:

•    Sunshine Health Freedom Foundation: www.sunshinehealthfreedomfoundation.com.

You can visit this site and click on ****IMPORTANT ALERTS**** for new issues going on.  You can also click on STATE REPORTS and see what is happening in different states that are not of an urgent nature.

•    National Health Freedom Action/Coalition:  www.nationalhealthfreedom.org
This site has a lot of information and articles about Health Freedom.

•    Coalition for Natural Health:  www.naturalhealth.org

•    Health Keepers Alliance:  www.healthkeepers.net

For questions or more information about health freedom in your state, please feel free to contact me: kimberlysharples@msn.com or (719) 390-1979.

Listed below are some health freedom issues that have recently occurred, along with contact information for that state.

CALIFORNIA
California’s Proposition 65 targets safe supplements.
This proposed regulation wants to classify all beneficial nutrients with above-RDA potencies as cancer-causing agents under Proposition 65 unless proven otherwise.
National Health Federation’s website has detailed information regarding this issue: http://www.thenhf.com/press_releases/pr_23_mar_2008.html

COLORADO
The Colorado For Health Freedom Group worked with other groups and organizations to defeat a dangerous, monopolistic naturopathic physician bill that could have put thousands of natural health practitioners out of business. We hope to introduce a health freedom bill in 2009 and will also oppose the naturopathic physician bill again in 2009 if re-introduced.  Contact Kimberly Sharples for more information regarding Colorado Health Freedom: kimberlysharples@msn.com or 719-390-1979

IDAHO
This legislative session, SB 1425 --a bill written to create a monopoly in the power structure of the Naturopathic Licensing Board was introduced. Thankfully, it was successfully amended to allow for the creation of a fair and balanced licensing board.  For more information, go to: www.naturalhealthidaho.org

IOWA
Iowa introduced a Health Freedom bill this 2008 session. For more information regarding Iowa Health Freedom, you can access this website:

VIRGINIA
There was a dangerous naturopathic physician bill (House Bill 784) introduced this year in Virginia.  It was pulled from the docket for the 2008 session, but will be introduced again during the next session.  Their Health Freedom group could use your help.  For more information, go to their website: www.cnhpva.org.

WISCONSIN
This session, a monopolistic Dietitian/Nutritionist Licensure bill was introduced. If passed, this law would have allowed only Licensed Dietitians/Nutritionists with certain educational requirements to provide nutritional information.  Thankfully, the bill died before the session ended.  The Wisconsin Health Freedom Coalition worked hard at defeating this bill. They have an active group that wants to pass a health freedom bill next session, and to be organized and ready to defeat the dietitian bill again next year.  Their website is: www.wihfc.com and their contact person is Syncha Maniscalco – syncha@gmail.com

In Sanskrit Pancha means “five” and Karma means “action” and Pancha Karma is a very powerful cleansing therapy, which is introduced by Ayurveda. Certainly diet, lifestyle and herbal supplements play key roles in creating and maintaining health, but Pancha Karma is all-important because it brings the body and mind back to a state of harmony and maximizes the body’s ability to heal itself.   Pancha Karma is a process not a procedure and this process consists of removing toxic accumulation in the body and then rebuilding the body’s immunity. Industry News

We are reintroducing the membership with registration to United Plant Savers for all herb and aromatherapy students. At the time of registration, students will have the option to join UpS, and we will add $20 to their registration.

United Plant Savers' mission is to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitat while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come. More information about UpS is available online at http://www.unitedplantsavers.org/.

This is a great organization to support and ACHS is proud to offer this opportunity to our students.
We were shocked to discover that Kimberly Clarke - the parent company of Kleenex, Scott and Cottonelle brands, supports clearcuts in some of our last ancient forests including the North American Boreal Forest. We use all recycled toilet paper now. If we all boycott Kimberly Clarke products and send them a message to let their execs know, they might realize that we do care about the source of our TP! Read all about it here. You can also download an action kit.

What's New In the Apothecary Shoppe?

Liquid Sunshine
Liquid Sunshine is a unique publication devoted to the subject of vegetable oils, their values and properties, how oils are made and the issues surrounding refined, virgin, cold pressed and crude oils. It covers information on over 50 vegetable oils, including some herbal or infused oils. Each oil has its typical Fatty Acid Profile listed along with the properties and uses.

Liquid Sunshine has received favorable peer reviews and has been highly recommended as a "must have" book for aromatherapists or anyone interested in vegetable oils - there is hardly anything published on this subject. Indeed, many aromatherapy schools now list this as their textbook on the subject, or for 'essential reading.'

To receive 20% off this book and your full order enter the code: REPORTER into the comments field in the Apothecary Online Shoppe. www.apothecary-shoppe.com
